MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology

Probably the most modern Portuguese museum

An innovative project that brings together a new building, designed by the architect Amanda Levete’s studio, and the Central Tejo, one of the national examples of industrial architecture from the first half of the 20th century, and one of the most visited museum centers in the country.

MAAT seen from the Tagus River

The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) is a cultural institution located in Lisbon, inaugurated in 2016. It is dedicated to promoting critical discourse and creative practice with a view to eliciting new understandings about the historical present and a responsible commitment to the common future.

The Architecture

The MAAT project, designed by British architect Amanda Levete, stands out for its curved, fluid shape, with a glass roof that allows natural light to flood in. The façade, covered with white tiles, reflects light in a distinctive way throughout the day, creating different shades. This innovative and futuristic approach has earned the building international recognition, including the award for one of the world’s best new cultural destinations at the Leading Culture Destinations Awards in 2017.

MAAT also offers an accessible viewpoint on its roof, with impressive views over the Tagus and Lisbon. It actively participates in the cultural scene, with events such as Lisbon Art Week and various artistic activities. It also stands out for its sustainable design, using local materials and natural light.

It is located on the waterfront in the historic area of Belém, in Lisbon, next to the Central Tejo.

The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology regularly presents exhibitions – national and international – with contributions from contemporary artists, architects and thinkers, as well as events and educational programs.

Impact on the City and Tourism

The construction of MAAT contributed significantly to the revitalization of the area, previously characterized by an industrial nature and less attractive to the general public. Thus, the museum has become a landmark, attracting visitors and driving the development of new businesses and services in the region.

MAAT has become one of Lisbon’s main tourist attractions, drawing an audience interested in contemporary art, architecture and design. Furthermore, a visit to the museum is often combined with visits to other tourist sites in Belém, such as the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower, contributing to the diversification of the city’s tourist offerings.

The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology is an important tourist attraction in Lisbon. A visit to the museum is particularly recommended for those who want to learn more about contemporary art and architecture. Additionally, visitors can relax and enjoy the atmosphere in its leisure and rest areas, with impressive views over the Tagus River.

Exhibitions and Programming

This museum fits into a broader vision of Lisbon as a cultural and creative city. Since its inauguration, MAAT has positioned itself as one of the key elements in the city’s major museum circuit, alongside institutions such as the National Museum of Ancient Art and the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum.

MAAT presents a dynamic program that includes:

  • Contemporary Art
  • Architecture
  • Design and Technology
  • Science and Society

In practical terms, MAAT is open from 10 AM to 7 PM, closing on Tuesdays and on certain holidays. Additionally, it offers combined tickets with Central Tejo and free admission on specific dates. It is worth noting that it is accessible to people with reduced mobility and can be easily reached by train, tram or bus. On site, there is also a design shop and a café with views over the Tagus.

MAAT: A New Lisbon on the Banks of the Tagus

The integration of MAAT into Lisbon’s landscape represents, on the one hand, the balance between tradition and modernity, and, on the other, an example of how a city can evolve without losing its historical identity. Indeed, the combination of bold architecture, diverse cultural programs and environmental commitment makes this museum an international reference.

Thus, those who visit Lisbon and seek more than the classic tourist sites will find in MAAT a place to reflect on the major themes of the present and future, all set within a truly unique architectural and landscape setting.
