Fort of S\u00e3o Bruno is a historic fortification located in Caxias<\/a>, in the municipality of Oeiras, very close to Lisbon. It was built in the 17th century as part of the city’s defenses against enemy attacks and was an important milestone in Lisbon’s military and cultural history.

It was built in the context of the Portuguese War of Restoration, with stone and brick. It has a symmetrical polygonal structure made up of a central body, square in plan, where the guard, gunpowder stores and battery are located.<\/p>\n\n

Despite its small size, it had great firepower at the time it was built, being designed with cannons and other weapons.<\/p>\n\n

One of the most notable features of Fort of S\u00e3o Bruno is its strategic location. It was built next to the Tagus River and the port of Lisbon, which allowed the defenders to keep an eye on the area and prepare for enemy attacks.<\/p>\n\n

In the 19th and 20th centuries<\/h2>\n\n

In the 19th century, the Fort of S\u00e3o Bruno was dismantled thanks to the evolution of warfare. Having lost its defensive function, the monument began to be used for other purposes, such as a target for shooting exercises; renting it out and setting up a tax office.<\/p>\n\n

In the 20th century, its facilities were given to the Fiscal Guard, which housed the Portuguese Youth Service. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the fort was used as a vacation camp, and the following year it was transferred to the Portuguese Association of Youth Hostels.<\/p>\n\n

Since 1978 it has been classified as a Property of Public Interest and in 1997 it underwent further restoration and rehabilitation work.<\/p>\n\n

Nowadays, Fort of S\u00e3o Bruno is a popular attraction. Visitors can explore the fortification and learn about its history and military importance. In addition, the Fort of S\u00e3o Bruno area is a great place to go to the beach, have picnics, enjoy walks in the open air and enjoy the panoramic views of both the river and the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
