Between the Monastery of Jer\u00f3nimos and the river you can also find the Empire square. It was from here that the Portuguese navigators departed. Nearby you will also find <a href=\"https:\/\/wpml.lisbonsightsailing.com\/en\/sights\/belem-tower\/\">Bel\u00e9m Tower<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wpml.lisbonsightsailing.com\/en\/sights\/discoveries-monument\/\">Discoveries Monument<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Commissioned by the King Manuel I, after Vasco da Gama returned from his trip to India, it was largely financed\u00a0by the profits from the spice trade. Its decorative elements are full of symbols of the art of navigation, of exotic plants and animal sculptures.<\/p>\n\n<p>In fact, this edification represents, more than any other, the romantic spirit and a key piece in the comprehension of the Portuguese soul.<\/p>\n\n<p>Being the most powerful representation of the spirit of the Portuguese navigators, is it common to visitors to fall in love by this Monastery.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-interior-do-mosteiro\">Inside the Monastery<\/h2>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>A surprising monumental interior take us to another world and time. The vast interior with its sparse light and intricate forms of stonework gives us the impression of being in an huge cave. The sensation of infinity is overwhelming and the world seems enormous and with so much to discover&#8230;<\/p>\n\n<p>It is here that you can find Vasco da Gama and Lu\u00eds de Cam\u00f5es, the maximum representatives of the Portuguese maritime discoveries.<\/p>\n\n<p>This masterpiece was later connected to another extraordinary Portuguese poet &#8211; Fernando Pessoa. Inspired by the symbolism of the Monastery, he wrote one of his best known works &#8211; The Message.
