Like in many other areas of human knowledge, the nautical field also has its own terminology<\/a>. Because sea-related activities are very ancient, the origin of many of the terms has been lost in time. The most frequently used nautical terms are listed below: <\/p>\n\n

Term<\/th>Key<\/th>Description<\/th><\/tr><\/thead>
Bow<\/strong><\/td>B<\/strong><\/td>Forward end of the boat or ship. The front in its normal direction of travel. <\/td><\/tr>
Stern<\/strong><\/td>Sn<\/strong><\/td>The back part of the boat and the opposite side of the bow.<\/td><\/tr>
Port<\/strong><\/td>B<\/strong><\/td>When facing forward, the left side of a ship.<\/td><\/tr>
Starboard<\/strong><\/td>E<\/strong><\/td>When facing forward, the right side of a ship and opposite to port.<\/td><\/tr>
Fore<\/strong><\/td>(f)<\/strong><\/td>Towards the front of the ship next to the bow. Term used to indicate the relative position of an object that is in the front of the ship. <\/td><\/tr>
Aft<\/strong><\/td>(a)<\/strong><\/td>Towards the back of the ship next to the stern. Term used to indicate the relative position of an object that is in the back of the ship. <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n
